Here's a truth I am a little nervous to admit. It hasn't been all rainbows and butterflies in my own family life... my family of origin was splintered in 2016 after my parents marriage of 30+ years ended in divorce. Since then, it has been a matter of trying to re-stabilize, redefine what family is and process the emotions that surface after divorce. I don't blame anyone for divorce... but the reality is that it is really difficult to navigate and that it can be messy at any age. I was 28 when it occurred in my family, and I can assure you that it is not easier to work through as an adult child. So, part of the reason why I absolutely adore photographing families is because despite the complexities of what it means to be a family, there is joy that deserves to be documented. Family photography serves as a healing mechanism for me.... I love soaking up the family bonds and believing in the love that is shared in family photoshoots. I love being present for the moments of joy and laughter, for the sibling relationships that are happy, for the new moms and dads as they warily venture into parenthood, for the grandparents, just delighted to be around their grandkids.
These experiences matter. They fortify your foundation as a family. They cultivate love and they shine on a light on the legacy that you will inevitably leave behind to future generations. Showcasing images on your walls and in your home that are soaked in love will surely evoke more of the same feelings in your everyday life... and that is something to celebrate.
